James Carey's site investigation involved the occupation of Room 244, a large room situated on the second level and southern end of Flinders Street. The previous usages for this area was for mail sorting, then uniform distribution, and Department of Child Social Welfare and for the past five years, condemned to a ‘dumping ground’ for objects past their use by date. James has painstakingly categorized and filed the discarded office materials filtering through the piles, inclusive of the dust, to create intricate compositions within the pigeon-hole cabinets of the mailroom leaving only a select grouping of historic rail mechanisms and large dust drawings on canvas.
